Backed by a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Gallaudet University in 1995, Ms. Friends furthered her education in 1998 by earning a Master’s degree in deaf education from McDaniel College. For the first few years of her career, she pursued the field for which she attended college, excelling as an administrative assistant for Telecommunication for the Deaf, Inc. and Sign Language Associates. However, in 2002, Ms. Friends was hired as a Claims Representative for the Social Security Administration, where she remained until 2004. This role provided her with the necessary insight to become a business owner, which had become a goal of hers by that time. In 2011, Ms. Friends opened Friends Interpreting Services, LLC. Today, she continues to serve as her company’s chief executive officer and owner.

Outside of her primary ventures, Ms. Friends has acted as a volunteer advocate for the Deaf-Blind Senior Citizen since 2016. She also is a President of Jefferson County Deaf Chat, maintaining Deaf Chat once a month. Likewise, she volunteers in other areas of helping her church in whatever they need and is a Potluck coordinator for the Frederick Church of Brethren. In 2018, Friends Interpreting Services, LLC had been named a 2018 American Small Business Champion by SCORE, the nation’s largest network of volunteer, expert business mentors, with the support of Sam’s Club. In 2020, Ms. Friends’ hard work was rewarded when she earned the Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year award from the Small Business Administration. An active member of her industry, she maintains affiliation with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, the National Association of the Deaf and the West Virginia Association of the Deaf. Reflecting on her many accomplishments, she credits her driven nature for her success. Ms. Friends has never given up on achieving her goals, which has enlightened her to so much industry information and is what motivates her to keep growing as a professional. Looking into the future, she hopes to continue to learn from her partnerships and become an expert in her field.
