Chaplin Dr. Leo W. Pickett, Certified Chaplain at LP Community Foundation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in library science and religion.
Growing up, Dr. Pickett’s grandmother took him to church, where they were always actively involved. His grandmother asked the music director to give him music lessons in order to sing in the choir. Since these early church-going experiences, Dr. Pickett knew that he wanted to pursue a career in the religious sector. A graduate of Lincoln University, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. Soon thereafter, he received a Master of Arts in library science from Drexel University in 1960. Continuing his education, he earned a Doctor of Education in higher education administration from Wayne State University in 1972. More recently, Dr. Pickett received an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy from the Global Oved Dei Seminary and University in 2019.
At the start of his career, Dr. Pickett worked as a rural service librarian for the Missouri State Library. After relocating to Michigan in 1962, he became an archives librarian for the Detroit Public Library, departing in 1964 to teach in the Pontiac School District. Dr. Pickett would return to library science in 1970 after six years in the classroom when he was named as the head of legal staff for the General Motors Law Library. From 1973 until 1995, he served as a professor at the University of the District of Columbia and the University of Maryland. Today, Dr. Pickett serves as a chaplain for the LP Community Foundation. In a career filled with highlights, is most proud to have created his first album titled, “To Love Him, Get to Know Him,” which includes music that he wrote personally. In the coming years, he would like to continue making music and developing his vocals.
