Desiring to become an architect since his middle school years, Mr. O’Brien was certain of his dream after taking his first drafting class. Coupled with his love for building things, he enjoyed helping his classmates become more refined in their skills, leading him to become an assistant teacher of his class. Matriculating at the University of Florida, Mr. O’Brien went on to earn a Bachelor of Design in 1984 and a Master of Architecture in 1990. Notably, he became a licensed architect in 1988 and is also certified by the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers, American College of Healthcare Architects and the Center for Health Design. He is licensed in Florida, Illinois, Tennessee, Michigan, Colorado, Kansas and Iowa.
Having accrued more than 35 years of professional experience, Mr. O’Brien has excelled in his role as a healthcare architect for Baker Barrios Architects since 2017. Reporting to the director of the healthcare department, he oversees every healthcare project in the office, as well as other small projects. Likewise, he is responsible for initial client contact, maintaining project details with hospitals and ensuring all drawings are up to the firm’s standards. Mr. O’Brien recalls his most notable achievement is his hands-on approach, which allows him to create impeccable spaces and facilities that aid in the comfort and care of people, particularly children’s hospitals.
Prior to his current role, Mr. O’Brien was the senior project manager of Harvard Jolly Architecture from 2014 to 2017 and the director of production for MRI Architectural Group from 2008 to 2014. He had also been a partner, senior vice president of the healthcare division and director of operations of HHCP Architects from 2005 to 2008, as well as vice president and senior project manager of VOA Associates Incorporated from 2000 to 2005, where he had earlier served as a senior associate and project manager from 1988 to 1995. Notably, Mr. O’Brien was the president of Christopher F. O’Brien – Architect Inc. from 1998 to 2000. Between 1995 and 1998, he offered his expertise as a project manager for Partners by Design and as office manager and senior project manager at Alfonso Architects, Inc. In his earlier years, he was an intern for Marcet Architecture and Alfonso Associates between 1984 and 1988.
To remain abreast of his industry, Mr. O’Brien maintains affiliation with the American Institute of Architects, the American College of Healthcare Architects, the American Institute of Interior Designers for Healthcare and the Construction Specifications Institute, of which he also sits on the board of directors. Looking back on his career, he is thankful for his traveling and Andrew Ferendino fellowships, as well as being named Outstanding Student in Design. Mr. O’Brien attributes his success to being focused and willing to work long hours. He hopes to be remembered in his field for his integrity and fairness and aims to build healthcare facilities in impoverished parts of the world in the future. In his spare time, Mr. O’Brien enjoys spending quality time with his daughter, Bridget.
