Paul R. Hegland, Executive Director at Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music.

Growing up, Mr. Hegland was surrounded by music. His parents often sang around the house and his siblings all participated in their school music programs. Luckily for Mr. Hegland, two of his sisters played the piano, which resulted in his parents buying a piano to have at home. This was what started his career as a musician. In the 1960s, scientists began researching the correlation between music and student performance, finding that students with music in their lives performed better in almost all subject areas. Mr. Hegland was fascinated by this study and decided then to pursue music education.

In 1982, Mr. Hegland earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from Iowa State University. Building off this to further his education, he attended Northwestern University in the following months, earning a Master’s degree in music history by 1983. From there, he began his career as the assistant director of development for the Ravinia Festival, remaining in this role until 1991. In the years that followed, he began working with Carthage College and the Lamb of God Lutheran Church as the special assistant to the president and the Kantor, respectively. In 2019, Mr. Hegland became the executive director of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra. He remains in this role today, continuing to demonstrate consistent success.

Outside of his primary endeavors, Mr. Hegland has served as the treasurer for the Kiwanis Breakfast Club of Kenosha since 1992. In previous years, he excelled as a two-term president. Presently, he maintains affiliation with the Association of Governing Board, the Association for College and University Policy Administrators and the Kenosha County Workshop Development Board. Reflecting on his professional success, Mr. Hegland credits how seriously he takes his work. Looking toward the future, he hopes to help the orchestra grow in regional prominence. He would love to see a more diverse network of patrons and music, all of which he will achieve through hard work. When Mr. Hegland is not working, he enjoys spending time with his family and practicing his faith.
