Backed by an Associate of Arts in business administration from Durham Technical Community College in 1972, Mr. Chavis went on to complete coursework at North Carolina Central University. Notably, he went on to serve IBM as a product structure and systems analysis executive for 34 years until 2010. In this position, he conducted research with developmental products, as well as a liaison for worldwide IBM locations. Mr. Chavis cites his career highlight has been being able to communicate with different IBM plants globally. He is also proud of his service in the Vietnam War, along with his strong connection to his faith that he made after his arrival back to civilian living. Mr. Chavis credits his wife and his great-grandmother for being pivotal influences in his life.

Outside of primary endeavors, Mr. Chavis has been a member of the church budget committee for Union Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina since 2013. He has also been a volunteer and board member of Mary Potter National Reunion Club and Operation Breakthrough, as well as a PTA president for local elementary, middle and high schools and a coach for Little League Baseball AU. Finding great success throughout the course of his career, Mr. Chavis has been the honorable recipient of an Award for Presidency of the Union, an Award for Coaching the Little League and an Award for Operation Breakthrough. Presently, he holds membership with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Durham County School Parent Teacher Association and is a board member of the John Chavis Historical Society.
