The job involved electrical controls and drive systems to motivate sheet-fed printing presses, paperboard processing machines, slitting machines, packaging machines, and other peripheral equipment used in the printing and packaging trades. He needed to know the operating characteristics of a-c motors, d-c motors and generators, and the control functions and equipment needed to direct them to motivate a machine’s elements to perform a sequence of operations. He also had to know, or learn, the mechanical composites and functions of the machines.
In 1960, he was asked to join the Specialty Control Department as an application engineer and product planner to facilitate the introduction of a digital automation control system for machine tools and processes which was the introduction of solid-state systems to replace electronic tubes and relays. The work involved users of machines and processes who needed automation, engineers of manufacturers of machines who needed help in designing machines for rigidity, foreign engineers to educate them in machine automation involving travel to foreign countries. In 1965. Mr. Shipley went on to become manager of NC machine sales and national sales manager of Monarch Machine Tool Co. in Sidney, Ohio from 1965 to 1973.
