Robert A. Hess, MD, FAAFP, President and Co-Founder at OVP Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care management.
While studying at Marshall University, Dr. Hess enjoyed the subjects of mathematics and science and seized upon the opportunity to work in a laboratory. Discovering his love for medicine, he delved into the health care industry, receiving a Doctor of Medicine from the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in 1984. Following this accomplishment, he completed an internship at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, in 1985, as well as a residency in family medicine in 1987. As his career progressed, Dr. Hess joined Huntington Internal Medicine Group, serving from 1987 to 1999 and excelling as the president between 1992 and 1999. At this critical point, he elected to establish the Ohio Valley Physicians, a physician staffing company.
Now known as OVP Health, the company has since grown to become the premier source of medical staffing for emergency departments and hospitalist functions at numerous regional hospitals. Since 1999, Dr. Hess has served as the co-founder and president alongside Dr. Stephen Shy, who died in 2020. Throughout the years, OVP Health has also blossomed and expanded to offer successful CARF-accredited addiction treatment programs in more than 25 locations across the States of West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, Ohio and South Carolina. Notably, the company recently opened a new, 62-bed inpatient treatment facility for patients suffering from substance abuse in South Point, Ohio.
OVP Health is a family-owned business, with Dr. Hess’ son serving as a hospital emergency department director, and his daughter managing the human resources department and Dr. Shy’s three children involved in medical practice, executive-level management and outpatient operations. Though his career has been suffused with highlights, he is especially proud to have established OVP Health, which now employs more than 300 people in five states. In addition, OVP Health has collaborated with Marshall University to commence a diversity internship program that offers internships to master’s level students of color who are working toward attaining degrees in health care administration.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Hess received the Alumnus of the Year Award from the Marshall University School of Medicine in 2019 and 2021, and was nominated as the Businessman of the Year by the City of Huntington, West Virginia, in 2020. He attributes his success to the terrific team members who put in significant amounts of time and dedication to the practice. Well regarded as both a manager and physician, Dr. Hess has been recognized as a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
