Karen C. Kabbes, President at Kabbes Engineering Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of civil engineering.
Driven by her mission to create a more sustainable and resilient world for the next generation, Ms. Kabbes has garnered a laudable reputation as the president of Kabbes Engineering Inc. since 1997. Bearing a wealth of expertise in flood plain and storm water management and modeling, as well as fine grain sediment drudging and watershed restoration, she is primarily responsible for overseeing all operations related to the cultivation and maintenance of water resources. Previously, Ms. Kabbes served as the executive director of the Regional Bi-County Waterway Agency, the chief engineer of the Lake County Storm Water Management Commission and the head of the floodplain management unit for the Illinois Division of Water Resources.
Ms. Kabbes initially became involved in her profession due to the influence of the environmental movement during the 1970s, through which she observed that civil engineering is one of the best ways to exert a positive impact on society. In pursuing a formal education, she attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, from which she earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, water resources and environmental engineering in 1977. Following this accomplishment, Ms. Kabbes received a Master of Science in public policy analysis and public administration from the University of Illinois Chicago in 1981.
Well regarded for her indelible contributions to the field, Ms. Kabbes has received numerous accolades. Among them, she was bestowed with a Lifetime Achievement Award, an Alumni Award from her high school, and the Margaret S. Petersen Award, which is presented by the American Society of Civil Engineers to women who demonstrate excellence in the field of water resources and environmental science. In accounting for her standout success, Ms. Kabbes credits her strong family background, as well as the help of her professional peers. Looking toward the future, she hopes to become more involved in national engineering projects.
