Chief Alexander C. Barnes, Chief of Police at Nicholls State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in law enforcement.
Having long been interested in availing himself to his country, Mr. Barnes drew inspiration from the example of his father, who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Originally intent on joining a federal agency, he developed a great passion for his work in local law enforcement and decided to remain active in the field. Before embarking upon his career, Mr. Barnes earned an Associate of Science in criminal justice and police science from Nicholls State University. Following this accomplishment, he received a Bachelor of Arts in government from Nicholls State University in 2009.
Mr. Barnes attributes his success to his parents enrolling him in various programs, such as the Boy Scouts of America. Likewise, he credits his experiences while studying at Nicholls State University, where he was able to work on his leadership, networking and building relationships. Mr. Barnes began his career at the university in 2004 and remained active in this capacity until 2013.
Mr. Barnes returned in 2018 and has maintained involvement in this capacity ever since. He is currently the chief of police and director of the University Police and Parking Services and an assistant director for police operations. In between, he served with the St. Mary’s Parish Sheriff’s Office between 2013 and 2018, where he held the positions of a deputy of the Uniformed Patrol Section, and a corporal, sergeant and lieutenant in the Criminal Patrol Section. As a testament to his success, Mr. Barnes has received myriad accolades, including a Commendation from St. Parish Sheriff’s Office in 2013, an Academic Award in 2010, and induction into the Nicholls Hall of Fame of Nicholls State University in 2009.
