With more than five years of experience in the field of nonprofit management, Mr. Cates has distinguished himself as the chief executive officer of the Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity since 2015. Habitat for Humanity is notably a housing organization that works with local communities throughout both the United States and the world at large to provide affordable shelter for all people. For his exemplary performance in philanthropy, Mr. Cates has earned such accolades as the Mary Ruth Rodenbaugh Leadership Award in 2017, as well as recognition as a NEXEN Hero by NEXEN Tire and the Purple Heart Foundation in 2019 and a Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce Hometown Hero in 2020.
Prior to his work with Habitat for Humanity, Mr. Cates served as a military recruiter and career counselor for the Vermont Army National Guard, having previously served at length in the military as a multiple-launch rocket system crew manager with the U.S. Army, and as a shipboard electronics technician in the U.S. Coast Guard. In honor of his accomplishments, while serving, Mr. Cates was bestowed with a number of commendations from the U.S. Army, including the Bronze Star, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Badge and the Army Meritorious Service Medal, among many others.
Mr. Cates sought an education at Excelsior College, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 2015. Prior to this accomplishment, he became extensively well certified in criminal justice matters throughout the United States and Texas, including for crime victims compensation, crime victim’s rights and as a level one sexual assault advocate.
