Dr. Grauer chose his professional path after being introduced to investments by his father at a young age. This led him to take an interest in concepts like modern portfolio theory. He felt comfortable with this subject matter and decided it was the right direction for him. He earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors from the University of British Columbia in 1969. He then received a Master of Arts from the University of Chicago in 1972. From there, he received a Doctor of Philosophy from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University in 1977.
The highlight of Dr. Grauer’s career is being referred to as “The King of Indexing.” He was part of the transformation of indexing and scientific indexing. He made contributions that revolutionized indexing. He is also proud of building a true, high-performance team that wants to contribute to the investment world. He began his investment career in 1979 with Wells Fargo Bank as a vice president, remaining for a year. From 1980 to 1983, he held the same position with Merrill Lynch Capital Markets before returning to Wells Fargo Bank as a senior vice president in 1983. He would remain with Wells Fargo Bank until 1989, holding the positions of chief executive officer and executive vice president. He then joined Wells Faro Nikko Investment Advisors in 1990, as a chief executive officer, staying until 1994. From 1995 to 1998, he held the same position with Barclays Global Investors. From there, he became a general partner with Angel Investors LP, where he stayed until 2001.
