Angela R. Garretson, Chief External Affairs Officer at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in public service.

Ms. Garretson celebrates more than 20 years of excellence in local government and diverse service in education and public administration. Raised in a working-class community by a family of strong women, Ms. Garretson credits much of her success to the examples of strength and independence she saw in her mother, a single parent, and her grandmother, a widow. She was given the opportunity to leave her community to attend the Montclair Kimberley Academy, an expensive and prestigious preparatory school, for grades 1-12, and realized quickly that the education she was receiving was much higher quality than the lessons taught by her area public schools, leaving her with a drive to work to create equity for others. Ms. Garretson holds a Bachelor of Arts from Syracuse University and completed a Master of Arts with honors at Rutgers University in 2001.

She began her career as a program director at Rutgers Eagleton the same year, transitioning to become program director at the Rutgers School of Public Affairs and Administration from 2006 until 2014. Since 2014, Ms. Garretson has been the Chief External Affairs Officer at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Her initial run for public office was in 2007, winning a seat on the Township of Hillside Council at Large. Ms. Garretson remained on the Council at Large until 2014, when she was elected Mayor of the Township of Hillside, serving until 2017. Currently, she is a freeholder for Union County, New Jersey, a position she has occupied since 2018.

Ms. Garretson attributes her success in government to her ability to remain grounded in the needs of the communities she serves and to integrate business-sector principles into her approach to governance. Outside of her work, she is active in the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa and the United Way and has been recognized for her service with an ROI Award. She looks forward to continuing to grow in her role and capacity to serve in the coming years and hopes to remain in local government in some capacity for the foreseeable future.
