Karla M. Smith, Executive Vice President at AEI Consultants, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in geology.
Ms. Smith is a licensed professional geologist celebrating more than 25 years as an environmental consultant for a broad range of private companies. Since 2017, she has been the Executive Vice President of AEI Consultants, an international, full-service consulting firm offering environmental, property, and facility assessments for a slate of clients including insurers and Fortune 500 companies. Ms. Smith’s interest in the outdoors began young: a self-described tomboy, she enjoyed fishing with her grandfather, hunting for rocks and fossils, and exploring nature. She recalls “acing” her first geology class as a teen, laying the foundations for a lifelong passion for the subject, and went on to study at Millsaps College, earning a Bachelor of Science in geology in 1982. Ms. Smith continued her education with a Master of Science in geoscience from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 1990 and a Master of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business in 2002.
She moved into business leadership in 1995 as the vice president and operations manager for the Reed Engineering Group, departing in 2003 to become vice president of the national client group for Professional Services Inc. Ms. Smith served as vice president of national accounts for Nova Consulting between 2006 and 2008 and spent the next four years focusing on fieldwork as the principal geologist at LFR/ACRADIS. She joined AEI Consultants in 2012, rising from regional vice president to Midwest regional director the following year. In 2015, she became the company’s national site mitigation and remediation division lead, a position she continues to hold in addition to her responsibilities as Executive Vice President. As a leader in her field, Ms. Smith is active in the Environmental Bankers Association, the American Wind Energy Association, the Solar Energy Industries Association, and Women of Renewable Industries and Sustainable Energy. She has been presented with AEI Corporate’s Divisional Excellence Award for Site Mitigation, among other honors, and credits her long-term success to her work ethic, emphasis on education, and teamwork skills. She looks forward to opportunities to teach and mentor others in the future, or to move into the renewable energy market as it grows in her region.
