Thomas S. Johnson, Retired Banker at GreenPoint Financial Corp., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in banking.

Upon earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Trinity College in 1962, Mr. Johnson subsequently attained a Master of Business Administration, with distinction, from Harvard University in 1964. At the start of his career, he was an instructor at the Graduate Business School at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines from 1964 to 1966 until joining the U.S. Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. as a special assistant controller, remaining until 1969. He went on to work with the Chemical Bank in New York City, where he later served as president and director from 1983 to 1989, and was president and director of the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company from 1989 to 1991. Additionally, from 1993 to 2004, Mr. Johnson excelled as the president, director, chairman and chief executive officer of GreenPoint Financial Corporation and GreenPoint Bank in New York City.

In addition to a successful career, Mr. Johnson has served in numerous leadership positions, as well as with not-for-profit organizations. Notably, being chairman of Religion in American Life gives him a sense of pride and he was very proud of his involvement with the Union Theological Seminary, as he was the first Roman Catholic chairman of the prestigious Protestant seminary. He also prides himself on all the work he has done since the terror attack of September 11th when his son, Scott, was killed in the World Trade Center. Since that time, Mr. Johnson has served on the board of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which was responsible for redeveloping Lower Manhattan with the $21 billion dollars provided by the federal government. He is also a founding member of the board of the National September 11th Memorial and Museum Foundation, which was also a source of pride for him despite the pain. He notes his family is the greatest highlight of his life. To attest to his legacy, Mr. Johnson is also listed in editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who In Finance and Industry and Who’s Who in America.
