Mathew Burrows, Director at Atlantic Council, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in government and security.
Dr. Burrows is an intelligence expert, author and frequent commentator in various media in the United States, Europe and worldwide. He spent nearly 30 years with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and eventually at the National Intelligence Council (NIC). He currently serves as the director of the Foresight, Strategy, and Risks Initiative in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security at the Atlantic Council, a non-partisan public policy think tank based in Washington, D.C. Among his numerous responsibilities, he conducts foresight studies looking at future trends in the economy, demography and geopolitics.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Burrows was a counselor and director of analysis and production for the National Intelligence Council from 2008 to 2013. Additionally, he was a senior analyst at the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center, deputy national security adviser at the Department of the Treasury and director of central intelligence rep to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations between 1999 and 2003. Even earlier, Dr. Burrows gained experience as the first holder of the intelligence fellowship with the Council on Foreign Relations, a political officer at the State Department and an analyst at the CIA’s Office of European Analysis between 1986 and 1999.
Notably, Dr. Burrows was honored with a National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal in 2013 and a Central Intelligence Agency Distinguished Service Medal in 2014. Attributing his success to hard work and having a wide network of support, he is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He also sits on the advisory boards of the Eurasia Foundation, School of International Futures and Italian Institute of Strategic Studies.
Upon earning a Bachelor of Arts in American and European history, magna cum laude, from Wesleyan University in 1976, Dr. Burrows went on to matriculate at Cambridge University, where he attained a Master of Arts in history and a Doctor of Philosophy in history in 1983. Continuing his academic prowess, he authored “The Future Declassified: Megatrends That Will Undo the World Unless We Take Action” in 2014. Looking ahead, he aims to continue working and doing a fair amount of writing.
