Senator Samuel (Sam) D. Thompson, PhD., representative for District 12 of the New Jersey State Senate, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in government.

Harboring a lifelong passion for helping others, Dr. Thompson is proud to provide constituent services in areas such as healthcare, unemployment, injury, and care for senior citizens. He earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and mathematics from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1960 and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry at Louisiana State University in 1965. During this time, he began his professional career as a research scientist for E.I. Dupont De Nemours and a resident scientist at J.P. Stevens & Co., where he would remain until 1971. While working in the sciences, Dr. Thompson was invited to attend a Young Republicans meeting in North Carolina and became involved with the group, rising to become state vice-chair. After serving as a campaign manager for a local senator in 1968, he moved to New Jersey to work as a campaign manager for a congressman who running for governor.

Dr. Thompson continued his science career as the director of the New Jersey State Department Health Laboratories for over 20 years while expanding his involvement in politics. He is proud to have been involved in every political campaign in New Jersey since 1969, and he has been elected state assembler for District 13 of the New Jersey State Senate, an assistant Republican leader to the New Jersey General Assembly, and named the director of planning analysis for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. Supplementing his professional career, he has contributed to the Old Bridge Township Planning Board and has served as the co-chairman of the Middlesex County Representative Committee and chairman of the Old Bridge Representative Township Committee.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Thompson has maintained professional affiliations with the New Jersey Mandated Health Benefits Advisory Commission, the New Jersey Commission on Capitol Budget and Planning, the New Jersey State Museum Board of Trustees, the Public Safety Communications Commission, the Pretrial Services Program Review Commission and the Fire Safety Commission. In recognition of his work, Dr. Thompson has been named Legislator of the Year by the New Jersey State Nurses Association, the New Jersey Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the New Jersey State Pharmacists Association, the New Jersey Recreation and Park Association and the Department of New Jersey VFW. Above all, he is proud to have improved the lives of those who have worked for him over the years.
