Johan van Huyssteen, Vice President of Productivity for the South America Region of the Newmont Corporation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mining.
Holding considerable expertise in mining and metallurgy, Mr. van Huyssteen began his career by earning a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and minerals processing at Stellenbosch University in 1993. He is also registered as a professional engineer, a qualified person and as a project management professional. In 1994, he joined Anglo American as a commissioning metallurgist in the Namakwa Sands primary and secondary concentration plants in South Africa. Remaining with Anglo American until 2009, he held various leadership roles across a number of subsidiaries and plants in South Africa, including multiple roles with AngloGold Ashanti, Anglo American Research Laboratories, and Anglo Operations Pty Ltd. During this period, he continued his formal studies and obtained a Master of Business Administration in 2001 before concluding his tenure with Anglo American as a project manager for the Peruke Pilot Plant campaign for Anglo Research and Anglo Operations in 2009.
In 2009, Mr. van Huyssteen joined the Newmont Corporation as the process manager of the Ahafo mine in Ghana, a position he held until 2012 when he became process manager for technical services, metallurgy and processing for the corporation in Colorado. Subsequently, he rose to the position of general manager of the Merian gold mine in Suriname from 2017 to 2020 and was briefly general manager of operations for the South America region in 2019. In 2020, he attained his current position of vice president of productivity for the South America region. In this role, Mr. van Huyssteen is responsible for ensuring the productivity of all operations that fall within their region, which includes collaborations, signing off on new equipment, keeping abreast of industry trends, facilitating technical support, and liaising between corporate offices and site operations.
Looking toward the future, Mr. van Huyssteen intends to continue progressing along the executive route, hoping to eventually attain such a position as senior vice president or chief operating officer. In order to keep abreast of development in his field, he maintains professional affiliation with a number of professional organizations, including the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, where he previously spent time on the council, the corresponding council and the metallurgical conference organizing committee. Above everything, Mr. van Huyssteen lives his life by the motto, “Trust to follow.”
