Laurence, a leading wholesale distributor to the glazing, industrial, construction, architectural, hardware and automotive industries based in Vernon, California, providing architectural railing systems, display systems, door and window hardware, glass machinery, handheld and power tools, interior office partitions, protective barriers, shower doors, and ultraviolet glass bonding, for over four decades.
Initially, Mr. Alba immigrated to the United States in 1969 and found initial employment with a Japanese electronics company and a petrol distributor. He began his career with Laurence as a custodian and moved quickly to assistant branch manager in Chicago from 1973 to 1986, returning to California as assistant operations manager and becoming a United States citizen. He further prospered as operations manager until his 2018 retirement, during which he oversaw over 700 employees. To bolster his communications skills, Mr. Alba took Dale Carnegie courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. Despite little prior experience in public speaking, he won a company award for elocution.
Mr. Alba gives much credit to C.R. Laurence’s former owner Donald Friese as his career champion and mentor. Mr. Friese brought Mr. Alba back to California after a 13-year stint as assistant branch manager in Chicago, fearing a firm in Illinois might hire him away, and thereupon promoted him to assistant operations manager. Mr. Alba stepped away from C.R. Laurence in 2018, in the coming years he intends to enjoy his retirement by becoming a gardener.
