Maricarmen Aguayo, Chief Financial Officer and Vice President at Structural Steel Works, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in finance, purchasing and entrepreneurship.
Maricarmen Aguayo was born in Mayaguez, and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In May 1989, she graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a concentration in Business Finance and Economics. A month later, she started as Chief Financial Officer of a family-owned company called Structural Steel Works, Inc (SSW). As a very young CFO, she oversaw financial and operating activities involving equipment, facilities, and construction. In 1997, SSW opened the Service Center Division and she became the first woman to lead such a division in the construction industry in Puerto Rico. Throughout the years, the Service Center Division became recognized as one of the main steel service providers in Puerto Rico. In 2002, after her father Jose Aguayo passed away, she became Vice President of SSW. As Vice President and together with her brother, Juan Carlos Aguayo, she was able to keep her business afloat during the financial crisis of 2008 and ever since has grown the company.
In addition to her achievements in the construction world, Maricarmen is also a proud mother of four children: Ramiro Jose, Gabriel Enrique, Valeria del Carmen and Maria Jose. Ms. Aguayo’s goal is to be a role model for other women, and she defines herself as persistent, strong and brave. She would like to be remembered as a “woman who never quit in striving for her goals.” Her positivism has taken her far and has inspired her employees to follow her. She is proud of being a successful woman in the structural steel industry that for many years has been considered a male-dominated industry.
Looking forward, 2021 is projected to be a record year, as she foresees a 38% increase in revenues and a 200% increase in net income for the Service Center division and taking the SSW Group to another financial performance level. Her male competitors recognize and respect her strength and financial knowledge. Looking toward the future, she intends to experience the continued growth and success of Structural Steel Works with a 3rd generation coming into the business.
