Jonathan David Atwater, Pastor at Antioch Baptist Church, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in military service and spiritual leadership.
From 1975 through 2005, Reverend Atwater provided excellent service as a military chaplain with the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Prior to his military career, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Mars Hill University in North Carolina in 1970 and a Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1973. In 1990, he continued his education with a Master of Arts from Salve Regina College in Newport, Rhode Island in 1990.
During his military career, Reverend Atwater was awarded two Navy Commendation medals, three Meritorious Service medals and four Legion of Merit medals. As a distinguished graduate of the Naval Chaplains Schools Advanced Course, he achieved the best response on record for their case study exam. Reverend Atwater was designated as a Master Training Specialist and Chief of Naval Education and Training in 1989.
Before and after his military service, Reverend Atwater has served as a spiritual leader as the pastor of McDuffie Memorial Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina from 1970 to 1976 and as pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church in Mebane from 2006 through today. In the coming years, Reverend Atwater intends to strengthen Antioch’s role as an inter-generational church with a special sense of concern for family and community and additionally to establish a mentoring program at the church for young men and young women.
