In addition, the company provides design and fabrication of permanent/touring museum exhibits, commercial displays, custom store fixtures and theatrical scenery nationwide. With the company, she supervises six people and is responsible for the firm’s finances.
For the eight years after she started, Ms. Strong-Wohlers was the only woman with Heartland Scenic, which initially had about 20 employees; it has since increased to about 50 and does $8 million in business. Originally strictly manufacturing backdrops and sets and providing theatrical lighting, the company has branched out to museum exhibits. Ms. Strong-Wohlers believes her success is based on her ability to be enthusiastic, lead by example, and be fair and she is hoping in the coming years to continue to help the company expand and prosper.
