In this capacity, he specializes in ensuring the safety of new products, along with ensuring compliance with all relevant building, safety and accessibility Codes and Standards, working closely with Underwriters Laboratories LLC, one of the largest testing laboratories in the world, to play a direct role in the testing of new products, as well as components related to installation, engineering and manufacturing.

Mr. Pursell began his career in technology in 1982 with Besam (now Assa Abloy AB), an international supplier and manufacturer of automatic entrance equipment for commercial, health care and residential buildings headquartered in Landskrona, Sweden, where he excelled for more than 30 years traveled to all 50 states to perform various troubleshooting and training services for Besam’s vast network of distributors. During his time with Besam, he held a variety of positions including senior technical advisor and director of technical services for North America. Mr. Pursell has been a member of the American Association of Automatic Door Manufacturers (AAADM) since 1994 and was voted president of the organization in 2021.

An offshoot of Mr. Pursell’s involvement with automatic doors has been to try and help in putting forward accessibility for those who are disabled. A government affairs committee group within AAADM was formed to try and help legislations nationally, statewide, and locally to increase accessibility. In addition, Mr. Purcell promotes the use of automatic doors at monthly meetings of the Citizens Coalition for Equal Access. Though he is still integral to operations with Stanley Black & Decker, Mr. Purcell is looking forward to a well-deserved retirement sometime soon.
