Excelling in nuclear engineering for over 30 years, Dr. Butler provided superior service from 1985 to 1995 as a project director of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an independent agency of the government tasked with protecting public health and safety related to nuclear energy established by the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974. Its functions include overseeing reactor safety and security, administering reactor licensing and renewal, licensing radioactive materials, radionuclide safety, and managing the storage, security, recycling and disposal of spent fuel. Earlier, Dr. Butler had prospered as a nuclear engineer for Aerojet, a premier rocket and missile propulsion manufacturer.
To prepare for his career Dr. Butler initially obtained a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and continued his education with a Master of Business Administration from California State University in Sacramento. He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear engineering from the University of Maryland. In addition, he served his country in the U.S. Air Force for four years.
Dr. Butler attributes his success to the culture cultivated by his mother that put great value in having education. As a career highlight, he cites his work with the hydrogen control system for nuclear power plants. In the coming years, Mr. Butler would like emphasize the benefits of relying on nuclear power.
