Backed by more than three decades of experience in of education, Ms. Ferguson Bates is the founder of Sanfoka Education Services, where she has served as the chief executive officer, director, and lead educator since 2010. Her educational philosophy is guided by her belief that children should be taught critical thinking skills, rather than rote facts, and she is passionate about helping students develop their interests, observe connections in the world around them, and become intelligent life-long learners. Ms. Ferguson Bates earned an Associate of Arts in business administration from Monterey Peninsula College and a Bachelor of Arts in business management from the City University of New York-Medgar Evers College, where she received an Academic Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement. 

Ms. Ferguson Bates was inspired to pursue a career in education through her own five children. From her experience working with a textbook publisher, she saw how her first two children were educated in a way that she did not agree with and she soon started home-schooling her kids. Prior to her current endeavors, she was the founder and director of Alkebu-Lan Home School from 1990 to 2000, a teacher at Children for Christ Academy from 2000 to 2001, a director and educator through Sankofa Alkebu-Lan Home School from 2001 to 2008 and an educator and private tutor through Maatsaellah’s Tutoring form 2008 to 2010. Earlier, she served in the U.S. Army for four years. Ms. Ferguson Bates hopes to bring back her home school to serve communities once it is safer to gather.
