Mr. Harmening found success for 45 years in the same profession before deciding upon a huge change at a time when most people are thinking about retirement. He graduated from Cathedra High School in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1955 and subsequently began his career with Link-Belt Cranes, based out of Lexington, Kentucky. He additionally sold insurance and served as a traffic manager with the Milwaukee Corporate Traffic Office in Wisconsin.

After retiring in 2001, Mr. Harmening decided to pursue a brand-new career in real estate. He received his real estate license the following year, practicing independently until 2012. From 2017 to 2020, he was a real estate broker with Mensendiek Real Estate & Auction Professionals in Jonesville, Indiana. Previously, he served as the chairman of the board of a credit union for four years and as a board member for 13 years. He was also appointed as the president of the religious education board for his church.

Mr. Harmening attributes his success to his faith and the upbringing that he received from his father, who taught him strong values. He also has a love for painting, a hobby he enjoyed as a child, and dedicated his adult life to cultivating his own collection of dozens of oil paintings.
