Ken Borkan, Founder and President at KB Capital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in investment management.
Since 2019, Mr. Borkan has found much success as the founder and president of early-stage investment firm KB Capital, a premier firm that invests in and advises early stage startups across three main sectors: sports and entertainment technology, cannabis, and social impact, and serves as the manager of Tech Coast Angels’ annual LA Fund and acts as an advisor to startups including YBVR and FanAI. From 2012 to 2017, he excelled as director of strategy, operations and research for the Phoenix Suns’ partnership group and served on the NBA’s Analytics Advisory Board, where he oversaw its strategy and operations team focusing on strategic projects, research and streamlined best-in-class operations. He then made an impact as the Suns’ director of strategy, operations and research from 2017 to 2018.
After initially obtaining a Bachelor of Science in marketing and international business with minors in psychology and business strategy from Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis in 2010, Mr. Borkan later continued his education with a Master of Business Administration in venture capital, entertainment management and social impact from the University of California, Los Angeles Anderson School of Management in 2020.
Following excellent service as a wealth management intern with Wachovia Securities in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area in 2006 and as a talent management intern and assistant with The Firm in Los Angeles in 2008, Mr. Borkan then served as a public relations intern with MSLGROUP in London and associate agent and intern with Platinum Sports and Entertainment Management, LLC in the greater St. Louis area in 2009. Mr. Borkan flourished as a senior business strategy analyst with Capital One in Richmond, Virginia from 2010 to 2012 and strategy advisor with the Aloha Investment Group in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area from 2014 to 2017.
Mr. Borkan gives all the thanks to his parents for his career achievements. They lovingly supported him and provided for his education. He also attributes his success to the network he has forged with people who have helped him throughout his career. He joined the world of entrepreneurship owing to the influence of his father, a perennial businessman. He began his career in business and basketball analytics, helping wealth managers make well-informed investment choices and working on NBA and WNBA operation analytics and their marketing partnerships. Along the way, seeing interesting companies whet his appetite for venture capitalism and angel investments, he wanted to be part of the ecosystem helping startups and creating jobs. Eventually, he found a way to combine his investment interests and passions in sports, entertainment, social impact and cannabis. Upon obtaining his MBA, he created KB Capital and leveraged his background and previous career experience to make the company succeed.
In coming years, Mr. Borkan sees himself continuing to be an angel investor and becoming notable in that capacity. He has set his sights on eventually running the entire Tech Coast Angels as the president. Part of his plan is to expand his involvement in charity work while running his own fund.
