Michael Lurvey, Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Phoenix Carbon LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in industrial innovation.

After initially obtaining a bachelor’s degree from Sonoma State University in Sonoma County in California in 1976, Mr. Lurvey later continued his education with a Master of Business Administration in international development and organizational behavior from the Shidler College of Business Administration at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2003.

Mr. Lurvey served his country with the United States Marine Corps, where he was deployed to Vietnam during the Vietnam conflict and flew with HMM-262, the first Hawaii-based helicopter squadron, known as the Flying Tigers or the Little Giants. The squadron was deployed to the western Pacific as a composite squadron and became the most highly decorated unit in the Corps.

After excelling in the construction industry, he made an impact as a project manager with Environguise Enterprises from 2003 to 2005, chief executive and president of Carbon Diversion, Inc. from 2004 to 2009, technology consultant with Carbon Bio-Engineers Inc. and owner of Carbon Geo-Tek Consultants from 2009 to 2019. In the latter year he founded and serves as chief executive officer of Phoenix Carbon LLC in Kapolei, Hawaii, which offers a leading-edge technology for rapidly creating energy, fuels, and commercial-grade chemicals from carbon-based solids without generating negative emissions and negative wastes.

Among Mr. Lurvey’s numerous honors are a Navigator Stars of Oceania Award in 2019; a United States Veterans Global Impact Award given by the Hawaii 2018 Global Breadfruit Summit; a Chairman’s Innovation Award from Total Energy USA; a NASA fellowship  from the the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and a National Urban Development Award for the whole system economic and infrastructure development of the Republic of the Marshall Islands’ Rongelap Atoll. His professional memberships include the HMM-262 Combat Helicopter Association, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Working with Dr. Michael Antal at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Hawaiian Natural Energy Laboratories served as the inspiration for Mr. Lurvey’s entrepreneurial dive into the environmental services industry. In 2002, they built the first commercial-sized system, which he reinvented, and received his patent for the innovation in 2012. As a career highlight, Mr. Lurvey received the patent for his innovation, Thermal Conversion of Organic Material (TCOM), a hybrid thermochemical system designed to convert waste into value-added commercial-grade products. The invention won the 2013 Chairman’s Innovation Award for the small capital level (under $500 million USD per year) at the Houston-based industry-wide competition, Total Energy USA Expo and Convention. In the coming years, Mr. Lurvey aims to assist Phoenix Carbon LLC in the development of a containerized system for portability to go to rural and isolated small population areas to assist with their waste disposal problem.
