Barbara Houston-Shimizu, Executive Director at South King County Food Coalition, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in food bank management.
With 23 years of experience, Ms. Houston-Shimizu serves a vital role in her community, connecting people in need with nutritious food and other emergency resources. She develops nutrition policies, works on grant administration and solicitation on behalf of the food coalition, and has established working farms in order to increase access to healthy foods for low-income families. Additionally, Ms. Houston-Shimizu serves as the associate director of the Des Moines Area Food Bank and bookkeeper at her local church.
For several decades, Ms. Houston-Shimizu has been a highly influential figure in sport of judo. As a competitor, she earned medals at the Pan American Judo Championships and a gold medal at the Judo World Masters, and is a five-time champion at the USA Judo Grand National Championships. More recently, she has served as a judo instructor and referee at tournaments in locations across the world.
Ms. Houston-Shimizu earned a master’s degree in international business from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in 1990, after obtaining a bachelor’s degree in international studies from the University of Washington.
