Calvin Grinnell, Retired Historian with the MHA Nation Tribal Historic Preservation Office, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in indigenous history and cultural preservation.
From 2002 until his retirement, Mr. Grinnell excelled as the historian for the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara (MHA) Nation Tribal Historic Preservation Office. Boasting expertise in the history and culture of the three affiliated tribes, he worked to ensure that his office complied with regulations regarding the repatriation of human remains. Mr. Grinnell also coordinated with the tribes and the county sheriff to ensure that any discovered remains were historical, not recent.
Prior to his position as historian, Mr. Grinnell served as a cultural preservation resource specialist with the MHA Nation Tribal Historic Preservation Office. He also acted as public relations director from 1991 to 1994. Committed to his field, Mr. Grinnell was a member of the North Dakota State Historical Review Board and North Dakota’s Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Celebration Committee.
Mr. Grinnell’s work has been featured on Wisdom of the Elders Radio at www.wisdomoftheelders.org. He has delivered numerous presentations on the culture and history of the Mandan, Hidasta and Arikara tribes. Early in his career, following formal technical training, Mr. Grinnell served in the U.S. Military as a telephone switchboard repairman from 1975 to 1979.
As a descendant of one of the Hidatsa Four Bears chiefs, Mr. Grinnell has deep roots in the tribal nation where he spent his career. After working for the MHA Nation Tribal Historic Preservation Office as a cultural preservation resource specialist, he accepted the position of historian when the office sought to hire one. In the coming years, he plans to continue to share his tribe’s culture and history through presentations.
