Franklin Schurz, Chairman Emeritus at Schurz Communications Inc, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the fields of journalism, publishing, and editing.
Mr. Schurz studied at Harvard University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1952 and a Master of Business Administration in 1956. While completing his education, he served in the United States Army Reserves from 1952 to 1962, rising from the rank of second lieutenant to captain before he reverted to inactive status. From 1956 to 1960, Mr. Schurz worked as an executive assistant for the South Bend Tribune. From 1960 to 1962, he served as assistant publisher for the Morning Herald and Daily Mail, rising to the rank of a publisher in 1962 and the editor in 1966, positions he held until he returned to the South Bend Tribune in 1971.
Mr. Schurz remained with the South Bend Tribune until 1982, working in multiple roles, including as director, editor, publisher, executive vice president, and president. He left in 1982 and took a position as president and chairman of Schurz Communications Inc., his family’s business, where he worked until 2007, when he was named chairman emeritus. He holds this title to this day, and through his decades of service to the company, Mr. Schurz held multiple roles, serving as treasurer from 1983 to 1989, and solely working as the chairman from 2006 to 2007.
As he started working for Schurz Communications Inc., Mr. Schurz returned to his education, graduating from the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University in 1984. He has maintained memberships to a variety of professional organizations over the course of his career, including serving on the board of directors for MSTV from 2001 to 2007, C-SPAN from 1997 to 2004, and the American Press Institute from 1985 to 1994. In the past, he served as President of the Chesapeake Associated Press, MD-DE-DC Press Association, and Hoosier State Press Association, and he is additionally a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the American Newspaper Publishers Association. After Board service to the Culver Educational Foundation, he was named Trustee Emeritus, and after service to the Atlantic Salmon Foundation, he was named Honorary Director.
Mr. Schurz has been recognized for his excellence with numerous awards, including the Presidential Award of Merit from the National Newspaper Association in 1965, and the Chuck Sherman Television Leadership Award from the National Association of Broadcasters. In 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Indiana University. As a further testament to his stature, success, and experience, Mr. Schurz has been included in the first edition of Who’s Who in the Media and Communication, as well as multiple editions of Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in Entertainment, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, and Who’s Who in America.
