Lois Deimel Whealey, Citizen Activist in the City of Athens, Ohio, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in social activism and education.
Inspired by her mother, Ms. Whealey set out to become a teacher after graduating from high school. In 1951, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Stanford University, going on to acquire a Master of Education from the University of Michigan four years later. In the years that followed, she became acquainted with her career in education, serving as a fifth grade teacher at Swayne School and then as a seventh grade teacher with Fort Knox Independent Schools. She excelled in education until 1976, which is when she received her call to political activism.
Determined to successfully alter her career path, Ms. Whealey chose to further her education. Enrolling in the Ohio University, she earned a Master’s degree in political science in 1975. In the years that followed, she became an exceptionally active member of her local civic community. Broaching the field as a member of the Athens County Regional Planning Commission from 1974 until 1978, Ms. Whealey proceeded to work with multiple established organizations. These include the Tri-County Vocational School Board, the Ohio Alliance for the Environment and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. A contributor of various articles to professional journals, Ms. Whealey worked with the Rural Action AmeriCorps Vista from 1996 until 1998. Today, she remains active with Ohio Women Inc., where she serves as a member of the board of directors and a secretary. Likewise, since 2006, she has happily worked with Cable Channel 1017 of Athens Community Television.
Throughout her illustrious career, Ms. Whealey has been abundantly awarded. In 1984, she earned the Unsung Unitarian Universalist Award from the Ohio-Meadville District Unitarian Universalist Association, going on to receive the title of Woman of Achievement from the Black Diamond Girl Scout Council in 1987. By 2002, Ms. Whealey had not only been named Outstanding Feminist by the Athens Herstory Celebration, but she was also named Peacemaker by the Appalachian Peace and Justice Network and received the Community Service Award from the Athens County Community Services Council. Most recently, in 2017, Ms. Whealey’s multitude of accomplishments was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Social Justice from the United Campus Ministry at Ohio University. As a further testament to her professional success, she is featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women.
