John Edward Lazar, MDiv, Development Consultant, Metropolitan Community Church, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in public service.

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1950, John Edward Lazar is ordained by the Roman Catholic Church and has dedicated his life to public service. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts from St. John’s University in Brooklyn, New York in 1971 and went on to earn a Master of Arts from Brooklyn College in New York, graduating in 1973. He subsequently graduated with a Master of Divinity from the Seminary of Immaculate Conception in Lloyd Harbor, New York in 1980. He is also a certified teacher and accrued his teaching license for New York City. 

Mr. Lazar’s long career of public service includes his current job titles as the regional alternate director for the Florida LGBTQ Democratic Caucus, a facilitator for the Foundry Methodist Church Annual LGBT Retreat in Washington, D.C. and the senior vice president for the Southern Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society, a position he has held since 2007. Since 1997, he has been the development consultant for the Metropolitan Community Church in Los Angeles, California. He is also active as the director of development for the National Community Reinvestment Coalition.

Previously, Mr. Lazar served as a panelist for the OPM National Conference Combined Federal Campaign and served as co-chair of the LGBT Commission under Washington, D.C. Mayor Jack Evans in 2012. He has held many other positions in his career, including working as an English Teacher for the New York City Board of Education in Brooklyn, New York from 1973 to 1979. He was also the executive director for the Peregrinatio Ad Petri Sedem, also known as U.S. Office of Pilgrimages in Vatican City from 1985 to 1986. He has participated in a number of civic duties, volunteering his time for such projects as chairing the New York City Computer’s Polish Advisory Committee, working on the board of directors for the New York City Volunteer Corps and being a clergyman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, New York. 

Mr. Lazar has authored editorials, including “Easter Message Resonates,” which appeared in the Washington Blade. He was also a producer and moderator for “City of West Hollywood Town Hall-Gay Spirituality” in 2001 and penned the 1996 book “Outpouring the Spirit: Gay and Lesbian Spirituality in the Judeo Christian Tradition.” He was also recruited as the host of the TV show “Polish Profiles” from 1989 to 1993. He is a member of numerous activist groups, several of which he was noted as a founding member and chairman. 

Mr. Lazar cites Mansioner Henry Zimmer as a personal mentor, who guided him during his time in seminary and throughout his career. He additionally had a successful career teaching religion in public schools and was already a graduate with a master’s degree when he decided to go to a seminary and study religion more in-depth. He became an ordained priest and opened his own non-profit organization, Polish Immigrants, with locations in Brooklyn and Queens, New York. He later worked with the Vatican and with politicians in New York after finding that religion and politics do often overlap. 

Mr. Lazar is a member of Alpha Psi Omega National Theatre Honor Society, an honorary alumnus of Our Lady of the Lake Seminary and a recipient of the President’s Award from the Stonewall Democratic Club. He received a commendation award from the New York City Comptroller in 1995 and was honored as the Citizen of the Year by Polish American World in 1982. He has also been presented with a Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been further featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the West and Who’s Who in the World.
