Amiy Varma, President at AAAJ LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in transportation engineering.
Hailing from India, Dr. Varma obtained a Bachelor of Technology in civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai in 1985. After immigrating to the United States, he continued his education with a Master of Science in civil engineering from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee in 1987 and a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1993. He is certified as a registered professional engineer in North Dakota, a Professional Transportation Operations Engineer (PTOE), by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and as a registered Professional Engineer (PE).
Dr. Varma excelled as a planning engineer with Tata Electric Co. in Mumbai from 1985 to 1986 and after arriving in the United States, served as a research assistant with Vanderbilt and Purdue Universities from 1986 to 1990. He then provided superior service as an assistant professor from 1990 to 1996 and an associate professor from 1996 to 2020 with North Dakota State University in Fargo. Since 2020, he has prospered as president of AAAJ LLC in Hicksville, New York. He specializes in aviation freight, transportation infrastructure and traffic engineering.
From 2005 to 2012, Dr. Varma served ably with the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and as chair of the AV070 Airport-Aircraft Compatibility Committee and a member of the AT045 intermodal transportation committee. Since 2019, he has been a member of the AMR20 standing committee on disaster response, emergency evacuations and business continuity. His other professional memberships have included the ASCE T&DI Aviation Council, American Society of Civil Engineers, Freight Mobility Council, Institute of Transportation Engineers, American Institute of Certified Planners, Institute of Transportation Engineering and the World Conference Transportation Research Society.
Dr. Varma considers his most notable achievements to include expertise in sustainable transportation and transportation financing and economics, research experience in infrastructure management, transportation systems, airport planning and design, traffic engineering and computer-aided design. In the coming years, his goal is to provide the level of dissemination that people may see as part of leaders’ ability to look into strategic things, especially when strategic directions need to be changed, and to provide insights that could be helpful in steering the research forward with findings on a variety of policy issues and sound analysis that can be improved in a particular interface.
