In preparation for his career, Mr. Hemperly attended The University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in biology in 1971. In 1976, he earned a Master of Science in environmental health from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Continuing his professional development, he was a Certified Safety Professional with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals from 1992 to 2016. From 2003 to 2018, Mr. Hemperly was a Certified Laser Safety Officer with the Board of Laser Safety, and since 1981 he has been a Certified Industrial Hygienist with the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. For his accomplishments throughout his career, he earned a Fellow Award from the American Industrial Hygiene Association.
Since 2012, Mr. Hemperly has been an advisory industrial hygienist with the Western Digital Corporation. Prior to this post, he held the same position with Hitachi Ltd. from 2003 to 2012 and served as a staff industrial hygienist for the IBM Almaden Research Center from 1989 to 2003. Mr. Hemperly began his career as an industrial hygienist with the United States Department of Labor from 1977 to 1982 and a senior industrial hygienist with the National Loss Control Service Corporation from 1982 to 1984. He briefly garnered further experience with Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and the State of California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health. Mr. Hemperly attributes his success to his continued learning throughout his career.
