With 55 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Smith has been designated as an executive director emeritus with Ohlone College and mayor emeritus with the city of Newark, California since 2012. He had previously excelled as the executive director for Ohlone College from 2006 to 2011 and the mayor of the city of Newark, California from 1972 to 2011. During this time, he found further success as the vice president of Oatey from 1979 to 2006. Mr. Smith began his career as a plant manager for the Ethyl Corporation between 1967 and 1979.

Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Smith pursued an education at Michigan Technological University, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration in industrial management in 1967. Over the course of his academic studies, he also achieved the rank of commander of the aforementioned university’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Unit. Attributing his success to God, he was inspired by Newark’s former mayor, Jim Balentine, and fondly recalls his exceptional efforts in the field of engineering before his extensive tenure in politics. In the coming years, Mr. Smith hopes to continue his pro bono consulting work while following God’s direction for his future.
