Robert Arthur Childs, Senior Vacuum Engineer and Technical Supervisor at ProTom International and Vacuum Engineer and Instructor at RAC Consulting, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering administration.
With more than 50 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Childs has excelled as the senior vacuum engineer and technical supervisor with ProTom International since 2011 as well as a vacuum engineer and instructor with RAC Consulting since 2007. Prior to these positions, he served as a vacuum engineer and laboratory supervisor with the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology between 1969 to 2007. During this time, he was additionally active as an electronic technician with Draper from 1969 to 1971. The former president of the American Vacuum Society, Mr. Childs found further success as a volunteer tour guide, a museum guide and a volunteer lecturer with The Historical Society of Watertown since 1998.
Having previously enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Childs fondly recalls working on the Apollo 17 Mission to The Moon, for which he helped design and test the Interferometer Experiment that was on the lunar rover. As a testament to his stellar professional efforts, he has been presented with a Certificate of Merit by the United States Department of Energy, the George T. Hanyo Award by the American Vacuum Society and an Honorary Degree in Plasma Physics by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Attributing his success to the influence, encouragement and patience of his high school physics instructor, he is grateful to have utilized everything that he learned in high school to help build some of the best vacuums in the world. Looking toward the future, Mr. Childs hopes to continue consulting on projects and improve upon former projects via virtual meetings.
