Specializing in artist royalty audits in the music industry, he has served as senior director, royalty audits for Universal Music Group in Woodland Hills, California since 2010, where he oversees audits of dozens of record labels owned or distributed by Universal Music Group. He also negotiates audit settlements conducted by the music unions, SAG-AFTRA Health Plan and AFTRA Retirement Fund as well as by the American Federation of Musicians, Music Performance Trust Fund, (MPTF) and the Sound Recording Special Payments Fund (SPF) and the AFM Employer’s Pension Fund, (EPF).

Prior to his current appointment, he was the director, royalty operations for the company from 2006 to 2010, having originally joined in 2001 as a senior royalty manager in Universal City, California. At the onset of his career in 1981, Mr. Poirier worked as an accountant and assistant law office manager for William R. Dickerson & Associates in Los Angeles, California. He then served as an artist royalty supervisor for Capitol Records in Hollywood, California from 1981 to 1983. From 1983 to 1986 he worked as the director of music and Warner Home video royalties for Warner/Elektra/Atlantic International Records (WEA-International) in Burbank, California. When WEA-International moved their corporate office to London, England in 1986, Mr. Poirier launched Richard Poirier & Associates, a business and talent management firm in Los Angeles serving as president for the next 15 years until he join Universal Music Group in 2001. He also honorably served in the United States Army as a finance specialist between 1967 and 1969.

As part of his vocational journey, he also cultivated his higher education, earning a diploma in English law and international comparative law with highest honors from City of London College, London, England in 1969 and a Bachelor of Science in accounting and journalism, with a minor in philosophy graduating summa cum laude, from Boston University in 1976. Additionally, he completed coursework pertaining to the entertainment industry, music accounting, and law, and writing at the University of California, Los Angeles between 1981 and 1986. He has participated in California politics writing numerous commentaries for media outlets and presenting papers at university philosophy conferences. His current major writing project is completing a book titled“In Defense of Individuality,” which he is forecasting will be published in 2024. Well-regarded for his accomplishments in the field, Mr. Poirier has been honored with numerous accolades, including being named the Studio City Local Businessperson of the Year in 2022 and 2023 and receiving a Universal Music Group Award for 20 Years of Dedicated Service from 2001 to 2021.
