He previously served in the U.S. Army, as an infantryman in the U.S. Army Reserve and a signal officer for the National Guard. To support his professional ambitions, Dr. Morris pursued an education at the Virginia Military Institute, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history, with academic and military distinction, in 1969. He concluded his academic efforts at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, obtaining a Master of Arts in modern European history in 1972 before graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in modern European history in 1979. Moreover, he accrued a Human Trafficking Awareness Badge, My Role to End Human Trafficking Badge and a Human Trafficking Awareness and Strategy Certification from Justice U in 2021.
