Luis A. Palacio, PE, PhD, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer at Diversity and Innovation Institute, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nonprofit administration.
With many years of experience to his credit, Dr. Palacio has excelled as the executive director and chief executive officer of the Diversity and Innovation Institute with Health and Science Innovations since 2015. A nonprofit organization, the Diversity & Innovation Institute is dedicated to providing STEM education resources to students that allow them to gain technology literacy and become prepared for the future through academic knowledge and training opportunities that help to generate solutions to problems plaguing humankind. Between 2013 and 2016, he was additionally active as the director of programs and research for the Diversity and Innovation Institute and the director of research and development at the Alivio Medical Center. He previously served as a research assistant at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) from 2006 to 2014. Dr. Palacio began his career as a design and application engineer for General Electric from 2000 to 2004.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Palacio pursued an education at The University of Puerto Rico, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering on the Mayagüez Campus in 1999. He continued his academic efforts with a Bachelor of Science in physics at Purdue University For Wayne in 2004. Following these accomplishments, he obtained a Master of Science in physics at IUPUI in 2007. Dr. Palacio concluded his studies at IUPUI in 2020, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in physics.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Palacio has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was notably presented with the GK-12 Fellowship from the National Science Foundation in 2011 and 2012. Subsequently, he was recognized with the Fellow Award from the Indiana Academy of Science in 2023. The recipient of numerous grants and scholarships, Dr. Palacio is proud of his research experiments for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, his presented research at the Annual Meetings of the Biophysical Society, and his ascension at the Diversity and Innovation Institute.
Dr. Palacio has attributed his success to his inner motivation and persistence, his curiosity and innovation, and his passion for diversity and inclusion as an immigrant from Puerto Rico. Among his many accomplishments, he is incredibly proud of impacting nearly 15,000 individuals through his work at Diversity and Innovation Institute over the past 10 years. In the coming years, Dr. Palacio is determined to make the business aspect of the Diversity and Innovation Institute sustainable while cementing his legacy, expanding his footprint within his community, and continuing to write an educational television program.
