With over 45 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Ponturo has excelled as adviser and consultant at Ponturo Management Group LLC since 2019. He began his career as an advertising executive at Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn, McCann-Erikson and D’arcy McManus Mass from 1976 to 1982. He initiated his involvement with Anheuser-Busch Companies, LLC as media director from 1982 to 1991, and then as vice president of global media and chief executive officer of Bush Media Group from 1991 to 2008. He served as managing partner at Kirmser Ponturo Group LLC from 2009 to 2016. He found success as adjunct professor and director of industry relations at New York University Tisch Sports Institute for Sports Management, Media, and Business from 2015 to 2016.
Mr. Ponturo was appointed to the role of head coach at Turnkey Sports & Entertainment from 2016 to 2018 and executive vice president of strategy from 2016 to 2018. He was further associated with Turnkey Intelligence as executive vice president of strategy and consulting from 2018 to 2019. He has garnered a stellar reputation as executive in residence at Columbia University Sports Management since 2018. As an adviser, he contributed to Fan Controlled Sports and Entertainment Inc. and at United States Tennis Association since 2020. He continued his career as an adviser and investor at Anheuser-Busch The Spare Food Co. since 2021.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Ponturo pursued an education at Villanova University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1974. Beyond his responsibilities within the field, he has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He was a member of the Villanova University Advisory Board for the College of Arts and Sciences and various community art and charity boards. He found success with his written works “Revenge of the C+ Student: Lessons on Life and Work” in 2022 and “In Today’s Industry, is Anyone Building a Culture Anymore?” in 2016. Moreover, Mr. Ponturo hosts the podcast “The Wisdom Circle,” which is available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, and TheWisdomCircle.com.
In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Ponturo remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He contributed as a board member at the Roundabout Theatre Company of New York, the American Film Institute, and Variety, the Children’s Charity of St. Louis, Missouri, where he was also president for 3 years.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Ponturo has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was presented with multiple awards including Tony Awards for the Broadway Revival of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” in 2012 and the Broadway Musical “Memphis” in 2009. He received the Champions Lifetime Achievement Award from Street and Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal and the Lifetime Innovator Award from PromaxBDA Sports Media Marketing Awards in 2010. He was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame in 2010, was ranked 14th in Businessweek’s Most Prominent Executive list, and ranked annually among the Top 15 Most Powerful Voices in Sports.
