Stephen Heyde, an emeritus professor of music and retired orchestra conductor, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the art of music.
Prof. Heyde enjoyed a fulfilling career in both music and education that spanned more than five decades, during which time he earned distinction as a professor of music and an orchestra conductor. At Baylor University, he was responsible for teaching a variety of courses on symphonic literature and orchestral conducting, as well as leading the Baylor Symphony Orchestra and the school’s campus orchestra, and was eventually granted the distinguished title of emeritus professor. During his time with the Baylor Symphony Orchestra, Prof. Heyde notably won the American Prize on five occasions between 2014 and 2017, and in 2019. He was also bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the College Orchestra Directors Association in 2018, among many other accolades to his credit. Prior to his work at Baylor, Prof. Heyde served as a professor at West Virginia University from 1975 to 1984, having previously taught music at Butler Senior High School for four years.
Outside of his educational service, Prof. Heyde maintained his involvement with the Waco Symphony Association from 1987 until his retirement in 2022. In this capacity, he was involved in a great deal of score study, leading rehearsals, liaising with donors and sponsors, and generally expressing appreciation and support for the talented musicians under his oversight. In accounting for his overall success, Prof. Heyde credits his dedication to hard work, persistence, and the encouragement of his colleagues, as well as that of the community, whose support made it possible for him to work with many, if not most, of the greatest artists currently performing. Looking toward the future, Prof. Heyde aspires to enjoy his retirement in the company of both his wife and grandchildren.
