Mr. Erdmann’s academic journey began by earning a Bachelor of Science in land use planning and geography with a minor in business and recreation and tourism from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 1982 and a Master of Science in hospitality and tourism from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1984. With an illustrious career path spanning impactful roles, he commenced as a marketing specialist at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture & Consumer Protection from 1986 to 1987. Subsequently, he held significant positions within the U.S. Department of Commerce, serving as a senior research analyst at the U.S. Travel & Tourism Administration from 1987 to 1996, and later as deputy director of research at NTTO until his retirement in 2017. Mr. Erdmann’s most notable achievement occurred in 1987 when he joined the Department of Commerce during an ongoing survey program initiated in 1983, focusing on gathering data from international air travelers. Dwindling federal funding posed a challenge to the program, and he recognized the wealth of information contained within the traveler dataset—spanning over 40 facets of travel details. He utilized the data not only to pinpoint popular destinations but also to discern reasons behind struggling locales. Recognizing the interplay between national and local economies, he aimed to foster sustained international travel to the United States. By strategically sharing this data with states and cities, Mr. Erdmann facilitated tailored marketing strategies, empowering tourism businesses to analyze traveler trends and refine their campaigns for a deeper understanding of the market.
Mr. Erdmann’s remarkable contributions are also evidenced by his role as a board member of the Travel & Tourism Research Association. His professional journey is adorned with numerous accolades and affiliations, including the Enough Good People Award from the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association in 2015 and prestigious medals, including gold, silver, and bronze, conferred by the U.S. Department of Commerce for his pivotal part in extending visa validity for Chinese citizens.
Mr. Erdmann’s unwavering dedication and strategic use of data have been pivotal in shaping national travel strategies and facilitating impactful policy changes. His passion for the field is underscored by a belief in the transformative power of information in bolstering international tourism and local economies. Looking ahead, Mr. Erdmann envisions a well-deserved respite, longing to explore numerous destinations and reconnect with friends while cherishing the joy of travel. He remains a staunch advocate for meticulous service in the industry, emphasizing the importance of commitment and collaboration in providing an exceptional travel experience for clients.
