Mr. Gibbs began his educational journey with a Bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of North Dakota in 1965, followed by a Master’s degree in physics from the same institution in 1967. Subsequently, he furthered his studies at The U.S. Naval War College, graduating in the Top 10 Percent of His Class in 1975. He then continued his academic pursuits with a Master’s degree in systems management from the University of Southern California in 1977.
In 1967, Mr. Gibbs entered the workforce as a civilian employee with the U.S. Department of the Navy at the Pacific Missile Test Center in Point Mugu, California, before being promoted to The Navy High Energy Laser Program Office in Washington, D.C. in 1977. He subsequently joined the U.S. Department of Energy in the position of Laser Program Manager in The Inertial Confinement Fusion Program from 1981 to 1985.
In 1986, Mr. Gibbs was promoted to the U.S. Senior Executive Service in the position of Special Assistant for Defense Programs in the Office of the Under Secretary. In 1988, Mr. Gibbs was appointed as The Principal Deputy and Acting Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy for Environment, Safety & Health. In the early 1990s, he served as the Director of Policy Coordination for The Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy and was subsequently appointed as the Deputy/Acting Director of the U.S. Super Collider Program until 1993.
In 1996, Mr. Gibbs ventured into the real estate industry, becoming a licensed Realtor and Associate Broker with Pitts & Bachmann, REALTORS. Over the years, he has been associated with various real estate ventures, including serving as Broker Associate and Assistant Manager at Sotheby’s International Realty from 2006 to 2008, and eventually establishing his own real estate brokerage, Advanta Realty Group, where he currently serves as the Broker and Owner.
Mr. Gibbs has received several accolades throughout his career, including an Invention Disclosure Award for an explosive-Driven Gas Dynamic Laser from the U.S. Navy in the late 1970’s. He has also served on the Board of Directors and held leadership roles as an active member of the Santa Barbara Association of Realtors. In addition to his professional pursuits, Mr. Gibbs is an accomplished author, having penned “Selling Santa Barbara” in 2014, and presented many talks and articles on real estate, as well as his contribution to the “Journal of Applied Physics’ with his work on X-Ray Difraction research in 1969. Mr. Gibbs’s extensive background spans both the scientific and real estate realms as well as the financial industry, having achieved certification as a Financial Planner in 1995, further showcasing his versatility and commitment to excellence.
