Mr. Chang, with over 40 years of experience in the field of architecture and real estate development, has excelled in design concepts, development strategy and problem-solving. Since 1980, he has owned his consulting business, working as a freelance consultant and contract employee. In these capacities, he has worked and collaborated with the top architectural and design professionals and firms, including various prestigious positions, including design director and project architect at The Office of David Elliot Leibowitz from 1997 to 2002, project designer in interior architecture at HOK Group, Inc., previously Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, from 1983 to 1986, and director of interior design at Anshen + Allen from 1981 to 1983. Additionally, he served as a project designer and architect at Marquis/Wong & Brocchini Joint Venture from 1980 to 1983 and as a design consultant for Fong & Chen Associates and the San Francisco Airport Commission in 1980. through which he accomplished assignments and projects such as the interior design of St. Mary’s Hospital in Reno, Nevada; the interior masterplan and renovation of the Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, California; the interior design and planning concepts for the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University in Polo Alto, California; the renovation and expansion of the San Francisco International Airport’s South Terminal, the design and management of the Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut; the renovation and expansion of many terminals at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York; including the landmark, Saarinen Terminal; the renovations of multiple New York City Subway Stations and as the lead design and planning to construction management of the Bradley International Airport in Hartford building. The World Financial Center for the transfer of operation and ownership from Port Authorities of New York and New Jersey to private developers; the interior architecture design for the New Orleans Center, New Orleans, Louisiana; and the iconic Tommy Toys Haute Cuisine and the San Francisco Ferry Plaza Restaurants.
As a consultant, Mr. Chang has likewise contributed to the conceptual architecture and interior design planning for Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California, the Deer Valley Resort at Silver Lake Village in Park City, Utah. and the Orangutan Exhibit at the San Francisco Zoo with Esherick, Hmesey, Dodge and Davis, a leading architectural firm in San Francisco; and the concept development of the exhibit and visitor’s experiences for NASA, the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and the American Family Immigration History Center on Ellis Island with Edwin Schlossberg Inc, the leading exhibit design firm in New York; and the development of the concepts of the interiors, store and merchandise planning for Holt Renfrew Department Stores at Montreal, Toronto and Quebec with Leading New York interior designer, Naomi Leff.
Moreover, He also aided in the interior and exhibit design concept of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the development of an in-store program and concept for Estee Lauder, Swatch Watch USA, with Macy’s New York.
Mr. Chang’s educational background laid the foundation for his successful career. He completed coursework at the California College of the Arts and Crafts. He also holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the Tokyo Design Academy in Japan. These academic pursuits provided him with a robust foundation in architectural principles and design, which he has effectively applied throughout his career. One of the highlights of Mr. Chang’s multifaceted career has been his ability to grasp and understand the needs and business interests of the developers and neighborhoods of different cities, countries, and continents in a short period and conceive of viable recommendations and strategies for the developing of the ideas and the project including future design and planning schemes as part of the project prospectus package for funding and approval of the project, prior to the perspective project is announced to the public, and to serve as a development guide from which developers and or corporations and manufacturers can work. As such, he has worked with international leading real estate developers, corporations and manufacturers, such as Enterprise Development/The Rouse Company, Merlin International Properties UK Ltd., Bechtel, Shimizu Corporation, Hunter Construction, Disney, MCA/Universal Recreation Services group, in numerous high-profile projects. Notably, he has participated in the planning and business design and strategy for the revitalization and redevelopment of the Madison Square Garden in New York City, the Leicester Square Premiere Place Project in London, England, the Great Northern Festival Marketplace in Manchester, England, the historical riverfront redevelopment in Clarke Quay, Singapore, Kop van Zuid in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Tokyo and Osaka Bays in Japan, The Attractions in Euro Disney, Disney World, and the concept of the Disney Institute and Club Disney; the Alexander Department Store for the Trump Organization in New York City which is now the Bloomberg Center. Mr. Chang has also provided the building plan of a private housing complexes for a royal family in Saudi Arabia, leisure development at Namwon, Chollubuk-Do, South Korea, Residential village and hotel at Chang-An Gulf & Country Club, Hukou Township, Taiwan, and plan for transforming 10 housing blocks to commercial and business mix-used development in Russia.
Mr. Chang attributes his success to remaining faithful to his passion and maintaining a focused approach throughout his endeavors. Proficient in Chinese rush painting practice in Taiwan, at age of 10, Mr. Chang was selected to participate in the production and selection of art works for the decoration of the Grand Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan. Since then, the interests in art and design and fashion, Mr. Chang also held a weekly fashion column in the United Daily News, the costume for Ms. Macy Shih, Miss Asia International 1968, Uniform for Hong Kong Pavilion at Tokyo World’s Fair 1970 and uniform for the opening of the Taipei Hilton Hotel while he was in high school in Taiwan. He became involved in the architecture profession after immigrating to the United States in the 1970s to pursue his academic goals. During his studies, he engaged in part-time collaborations with his professors, which sparked his interest in freelance architecture.
One of the highlights of Mr. Chang’s multifaceted career has been his ability to grasp and understand the needs and business interests of the developers and neighborhoods of different cities, countries, and continents in a short period and conceive of viable recommendations and strategies for the developing of the ideas and the project including future design and planning schemes as part of the project prospectus package for funding and approval of the project, and a development guide from which developers and or corporations and manufacturers can work.
Mr. Chang’s most challenging yet successful project in such category including the introduction of private viewing sky boxes, press and media center, retail, food and beverage court and booths and the Paramount Theater to redevelopment of the Madison Square Garden in New York, the Leicester Square Premiere Place Project in London, England, which was particularly challenging due to its sensitivity, and the complex relationships between the owners- the families of the royals and the nobilities, and the renters – the powerful international corporations and operators. The project aimed to clean up and transform the square into a financially viable retail and entertainment zone other than for film premieres. The same result goes to the success of the Clarke Kay Development Project in Singapore which turned the old lumber boating dock into a vibrant retail and entertainment center that also initiated the surrounding area to become the business center of the city today.
Looking ahead, Mr. Chang eagerly anticipates embarking on meaningful and challenging new ventures. He offers strategic consulting services in new development concepts, design, planning, and business deals, as well as tenant market research and analysis for international real estate development companies, landowners, corporations, manufacturers, and architectural and planning professionals. For the last ten years, through a favor of helping a friend to renovate an apartment, his focus has been on private and residential projects, specifically apartment and townhouse renovations by the requests of friends and relatives, as well as referrals. With extensive work experience and interest of understanding personal style and need, his approach of the project is based on understanding of the needs, goals, and lifestyle of the homeowner first, and then translating them with his own particular design style to serve as the timeless and diversified background for any modern living. The result of the strategy became to realize when some of the projects he worked on began to sell at high returns during the COVID-19 pandemic.
