Derek Fromson, Principal at Digital Dominoes Consulting, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in communications.

With several decades of experience to his credit, Mr. Fromson excels as the principal of Digital Dominoes Consulting. Since 2016, he has been a senior digital and offline strategist for Fortune 500 clients, international development organizations, healthcare, and other nonprofits. He began his career as an environmental editor and special assignment reporter for Reforma, a Spanish-language start-up newspaper in Mexico City that became one of the country’s most prominent news publications. Three years later, Mr. Fromson moved to the U.S.-Mexico border towns of Ciudad Juarez and El Paso, Texas to cover maquiladora and NAFTA issues as managing editor of a bilingual business weekly magazine, El Paso-Juarez Business Journal, which was affiliated with Norte Newspaper.

After returning to the United States, Mr. Fromson worked for the Washington Post as metro graphics editor and at the Los Angeles Times on their website as a night news editor and subsequently as a special projects editor. Later, he served as a senior writer for American Funds at The Capital Group. He then managed content and strategic issues for the website at Occidental College, a prestigious liberal arts institution in Los Angeles. In 2004, Mr. Fromson began consulting on digital strategy for Korn Ferry, the world’s largest executive search firm. A few years later, he joined Korn Ferry full-time as senior manager for global marketing and web communications.

In 2012, Mr. Fromson accepted an opportunity from the World Bank to serve as head of external digital communications, open financial data in the controller’s office and moved with his family to Washington, D.C. A few years later, he found further success when he left the World Bank to work as the director of communications for the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in Washington, D.C. He led a large and diverse team in all matters related to corporate communications, including digital strategy, social media, public affairs, multimedia, publications, design, and brand integrity.

A few years later, Mr. Fromson left PAHO/WHO to start his own strategic communications consulting firm, Digital Dominoes Consulting, LLC. He is currently a member of the Communications Network. Mr. Fromson was also affiliated with the Online News Association and the Society of News Design at earlier stages of his career.

Before starting his professional path, Mr. Fromson earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science with a minor in economics at the University of California, Berkeley. He continued his academic pursuits at Cornell University, obtaining a master’s degree in regional planning, focusing on international development and environmental issues. Years later, he returned to the classroom to earn an Executive Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in leadership and management from The Marshall School at the University of Southern California. Through various organizations, Mr. Fromson also became certified in web analytics, data exploration and storytelling, and podcasting.

Other cherished moments in Mr. Fromson’s career include leading a team of 30 people at the Pan American Health Organization, breaking down organizational barriers by effectively liaising across various departments using HTML and Javascript to collaborate more effectively with his colleagues in information technology, and creating a leadership tool called “3 x 3 x 3,” which encourages people to focus on their strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations. The cornerstone of his success lies in his humility and ability to foster community with the people around him, his willingness to take risks, and his agility in the workplace. Mr. Fromson advocates for a better understanding of the dos and don’ts of when and how to best utilize artificial intelligence in communications. He parlays his burgeoning expertise to others through articles, podcasts, and public speaking engagements.

In conjunction with his primary work, Mr. Fromson has been active in his community, leading fundraising initiatives as a PTA member at his daughter’s high school, as a stroke-and-turn official for USA Swimming, and previously as an age group swim coach for The Capitol Sea Devils and Tollefson Swimming, as manager of a BCC Little League team, as a cubmaster for the Boy Scouts of America, and as assistant manager for the Capitol City Little League and the Montgomery County Little League of Maryland. Aside from open water swimming and competing in prestigious swim races such as Escape from Alcatraz in San Francisco, the Greater Chesapeake Bay Swim in Maryland, the Big Shoulders Swim in Chicago’s Lake Michigan, and assorted other distances in the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, he offers private swim lessons to adults, from beginners to more advanced swimmers.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Fromson has accrued a number of accolades throughout his career. He received the Award of Excellence from the Society of News Design for his work at the Washington Post, a Top of the Times Award from the Los Angeles Times, the Prism Award of Excellence by the Public Relations Society of America, and the Mercury Award by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for his work with Korn Ferry, a Vice Presidential Unit Team Award from the World Bank, and the International Human Rights Day Award from the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization.

While his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. Fromson takes the most pride in one of his earliest roles when living in Mexico City and managing a team of local reporters for Reforma. Mr. Fromson is fluent in Spanish. Soon after the newspaper’s launch, Luis Donaldo Colosio, the leading presidential candidate in Mexico, was assassinated. Mr. Fromson, his team, and the rest of the newspaper staff sprang into action to cover the story and revamped the edition’s entire content in five hours.
