Steven Emerson, executive director at The Investigative Project On Terrorism, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in investigative reporting.
With over three decades of experience as a leading authority in the field of international counterterrorism to his credit, Mr. Emerson has further excelled in the field of journalism and investigative reporting. He is currently the executive director for The Investigative Project on Terrorism, one of the world’s largest repositories of data, documents, and electronic recordings on radical Islamic groups and leaders going back to the 1970s up to the present day.
Prior to founding the Investigative Project in 1995, Mr. Emerson served as a correspondent for CNN, specializing in counterterrorism investigations, particularly related to the Middle East. He previously worked as a journalist for The New York Times Magazine for two years and as an investigative reporter for U.S. News & World Report. He has also been active as a freelance writer for The New Republic and a staff member for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee under a prominent senator.
Mr. Emerson became involved in his profession by starting in journalism and authoring eight books on terrorism. His career took a significant turn when he produced the documentary “Jihad in America” for public television in 1994. The award-winning documentary garnered substantial attention in national security circles, leading to inquiries from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency. Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Emerson pursued an education at Brown University, earning a master’s degree in political science in 1977, laying an academic foundation for his career.
Realizing the wealth of material he had collected, Mr. Emerson founded a nonprofit organization in 1995, The Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT), dedicated to investigating and disseminating information on counterterrorism to government officials, reporters, and the public. IPT is recognized as one of the world’s most comprehensive data centers on radical Islamic terrorist groups. The research carried out by the IPT team has formed the basis for thousands of articles and television specials on radical Islamic involvement in terrorism and has led to successful government action against terrorists and financiers based in the United States. For more than two decades, IPT has investigated the operations, funding, activities, and front groups of Islamic terrorist and extremist organizations in the United States and around the world.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Emerson has accrued several accolades throughout his career. His second documentary, “Jihad in America: The Grand Deception,” which was produced in 2013, has earned him multiple awards, recognizing his significant contributions to investigative journalism and his dedication to uncovering the truth about terrorism. He attributes his success to his passion for storytelling and writing. He particularly enjoys making documentaries, which allow him to showcase his creativity.
Mr. Emerson has found immense satisfaction as an international reporter, where he found the work both fun and intellectually stimulating. This experience allowed him to hone his writing skills significantly. However, his true passion lies in creating documentaries. He believes that capturing the right video and presenting it in the proper context can have a profound impact. What brings him the most fulfillment is knowing that his efforts have contributed to stopping terrorism or aiding its victims. He has met thousands of terrorism victims and is dedicated to uncovering stories and leads worldwide. He actively recruits sources and has established connections in over 70 countries.
Looking ahead, Mr. Emerson is driven by the desire to make a positive impact on others. He does not seek fame or money but is dedicated to addressing terrorism. He plans to continue focusing on terrorism, finish writing his memoirs, and produce more documentaries.
