Earlier in his career, he was a product manager and business solution architect in wealth management at Polaris Financial Technology Limited from 2005 to 2014 and a senior solution architect at Citi from 2008 to 2014. His initial roles included senior business analyst at Bankers Trust from 2007 to 2008 and credit risk manager at a private sector bank from 2004 to 2005.
Mr. Gatala’s creative works include publishing a textbook, working on another, authoring several papers, and holding patents in both Germany and India. His extensive background and expertise have made him a valuable asset in his field, contributing significantly to various projects and initiatives.
Laying a solid foundation for his future success, Mr. Gatala pursued an education at Andhra University, earning a bachelor’s degree in technology and chemical engineering in 2002. He continued his academic efforts at the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, where he earned a Master of Business Administration in finance and marketing in 2004.
In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Gatala has been involved with the International Institute of Business Analysis since 2019 and the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance since 2015. He is also a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Mr. Gatala also volunteers at his church and serves as one of six members on the board of directors of an NGO supporting aspiring researchers transitioning from classroom theory to corporate practice. He actively mentors both within his spiritual community and the professional realm, providing guidance and support through LinkedIn, email, and Zoom sessions. Embracing continuous learning through sharing, he finds fulfillment in assisting others with their projects, whether reviewing papers or book chapters. He sees his role as igniting the potential in others, viewing each mentee’s success as a testament to his own legacy.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Gatala has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He won the Digital Product Innovation Competition at HSBC India and was presented with the Konark Award at Polaris Consulting and Services Ltd.
A standout moment in Mr. Gatala’s career was implementing the financial regulatory’s strict mandate for Citibank in 2017. His leadership and guidance helped direct the team under a tight deadline without compromising the quality of work. This achievement is still discussed today, highlighting his ability to build systems from the ground up and implement effective policies and procedures. As a result, Citibank now has an enterprise-wide model risk system. He attributes his success to self-belief, emphasizing that self-confidence is crucial regardless of external support.
Looking ahead, Mr. Gatala aims to develop a new risk framework using artificial intelligence (AI). Currently working in Citibank’s AI model risk space, he believes many banks could benefit from AI for various tasks. He strives to create a framework that incorporates AI and customer needs while balancing efficiency and regulation. Confident in his extensive experience in the finance industry, particularly in risk and compliance, he aims to develop a framework that benefits both the bank and its customers.
Additionally, Mr. Gatala plans to continue contributing to his community by helping others learn and grow. He wants to reduce barriers and enable learning for all. He also aspires to continue writing books in the future.
