Ernie Rushing, PhD, Associate Dean of Enrollment at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in higher education administration
With more than 15 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Rushing currently serves as the associate dean of enrollment, alumni and student affairs at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing since 2021. In this position, he supervises program development, marketing, and helping students with their academic issues while encouraging alumni engagement. He was previously active as the director of admissions and recruitment at Duke University School of Nursing from 2012 to 2021.Prior to these posts, he served at Methodist University as the assistant director of admissions between 2008 and 2012 and the director of social media between 2009 and 2012. Dr. Rushing began his career as the director of admissions at Louisburg College from 2007 to 2008.
To support his professional ambitions, Dr. Rushing initially pursued an education at UNC Greensboro, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 2004. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Business Administration in organizational management and leadership at Methodist University in 2010. He concluded his formal studies at Nova Southeastern University in 2014, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in conflict analysis and resolution with a concentration in organizations and schools. In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Rushing completed continuing education certificates through Harvard University, Duke University and Yale University. Additionally, Dr. Rushing completed enrollment management certification through the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and the Carolinas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
Dr. Rushing has attributed his success to his consistency, his reputation for exceptional results, and his networking skills. He was drawn to his field by the opportunity to improve the lives of students and their families through the opportunities offered through higher education. Among the highlights of his career, he is incredibly proud to have obtained his Enrollment Management Institute Certification from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) in 2017. He also fondly recalls being appointed as the president of the Graduate Nursing Admissions Professionals, for which he created a program that provided mid-level professionals with opportunities for advancement. In the coming years, Dr. Rushing hopes to continue developing new recruitment programs and initiatives aimed at encouraging more students to pursue graduate education. He also is working to establish an infrastructure that will facilitate a more holistic application review process for all students.
