Dr. Louie has nearly four decades of professional experience focused primarily in using digital technologies to facilitate business operations in the life sciences industry. He is currently an advisor to Silicon Valley technology companies that are developing AI solutions that can be used by the biopharmaceutical and medical device industries.

Dr. Louie was formerly senior vice president of digital transformation and chief information officer of Kodiak Sciences, a role he had held since 2022. In this capacity, his primary responsibilities involved assessing their business processes in research, finance, manufacturing, clinical, quality and regulatory compliance to identify opportunities for enhancing efficiency through the implementation of automation and digital transformation. His experience also includes executive leadership and management roles at Gilead Sciences: vice president of analytical operations and information systems from 2019 to 2022, vice president of information technology from 2016 to 2019, senior director of information technology (IT) from 2010 to 2016, director of IT quality, security, and compliance from 2006 to 2010, associate director of IT from 1998 to 2006 and research scientist from 1993 to 1998. Additionally, he was a scientist at Monsanto from 1992 to 1993, an analytical chemist at Syntex Corporation from 1986 to 1987, and an organic chemist at Shell Agricultural Biological Sciences Research Center from 1985 to 1986.

Dr. Louie dedicates his time as a volunteer at the San Francisco Botanical Garden and the Filoli Historic House & Garden in Woodside, California and holds memberships with the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering and the American Chemical Society. He laid a solid educational foundation, earning a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of California, Davis, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry from the University of California, Riverside. His career journey was driven by his early fascination with science, inspired by seeing scientists on television making impactful discoveries in chemistry and biology. A pivotal moment came during his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Davis, when organic chemistry revealed the intricate interactions of atoms and molecules that underpin life. This revelation established his passion for applying chemistry to life sciences.

Dr. Louie takes pride in his significant achievement in laboratory automation and enhancing data integrity, particularly within the life sciences industry. He credits his success to the guidance of his mentors, as he actively sought out mentorship and built strong relationships with his supervisors and senior executives. His mentors highlighted the importance of staying current with developments, encouraging him to explore the use of digital technologies, data sciences and analytics to scale and advance business operations during periods of organizational hypergrowth.

Dr. Louie envisions a future where AI is harnessed to create precise models from biometric images, potentially transforming disease diagnostics. He foresees non-invasive scans providing comprehensive insights into an individual’s cardiovascular, endocrine, ophthalmologic, and neural health, enabling earlier diagnoses and facilitating preventive and personalized treatments for various health conditions. Additionally, Dr. Louie identifies significant potential in developing AI models to enhance the development, manufacturing, and stability of pharmaceutical products, thereby improving operational efficiency and ensuring high product quality. He seeks to collaborate with diverse teams to share his approach to developing machine learning models, leveraging generative AI, and utilizing neural networks to advance medical applications within the constraints of a highly regulated industry. Through these collaborations, he intends to drive innovation and ensure that AI technologies are applied effectively and responsibly in the medical field.

Drawing on his extensive experience in FDA-regulated environments, Dr. Louie is committed to delivering practical insights and developing methodologies that comply with the regulatory standards of global health authorities. By focusing on skills in computer validation, data integrity, and regulatory compliance, he seeks to bridge the gap between concept and market, ensuring that AI and IT technologies are effectively employed to accelerate product development, prevent drug shortages, enhance medical treatments, and ultimately improve patient care.
