He has served as the founder of SciencePoint Solutions LLC since 2009, chief operating officer of Ingentium since 2015, and cofounder of Axiomedix Inc. since 2017. His experience also includes roles such as vice president of marketing at i2b2 tranSMART from 2014 to 2022, product management at PHEMI Systems from 2020 to 2021, and director of products at Curoverse Research from 2017 to 2020. Additionally, he was a Vistage chair at Vistage Worldwide Inc. from 2016 to 2017, chief business officer at iChemLabs from 2014 to 2015, and vice president of product strategy at PerkinElmer from 2012 to 2013. He also held the position of executive director of global accounts at PerkinElmer from 2011 to 2012, served as worldwide industry strategist for pharma at Microsoft from 2007 to 2010, and was vice president of enterprise solutions at Cambridgesoft from 2005 to 2007.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Potenzone served as senior vice president at Ingenuity Systems from 2004 to 2006, chief executive officer of U.S. operations at LION Bioscience Inc. from 2001 to 2004, senior vice president of R&D at MDL from 1997 to 2001, and director of research in new product development at CAS from 1992 to 1997. His earlier roles also include vice president of scientific applications at Accelrys from 1986 to 1992, manager of research computing at American Cyanamid from 1983 to 1986, and research fellow at Case Western Reserve University from 1978 to 1979. Additionally, he has contributed his expertise at Elsevier. He has also been an active board member of International Chemical Identifier (InChI) and BioReason and has been a member of the American Chemical Society for over 50 years. Additionally, he has organized numerous symposia and sessions at American Chemical Society meetings and contributed to tranSMART Foundation annual meetings. He has also served in marketing and outreach for the InChI Trust in London since 2021 and as a business mentor at CoMotion at the University of Washington since 2015.
Throughout his career, Dr. Potenzone’s research has focused on molecular simulations of biologically significant molecules and polymers, including polysaccharides, proteins, nucleic acids, drugs, and their interactions. He has strongly advocated for the development and widespread use of InChI for molecular structure storage and searching. In light of his impressive undertakings, he has been honored with the Mike Lynch Award from The Chemical Structure Association Trust in 2018 and an R&D 100 Award for SciFinder from R&D Magazine in 1996. Laying a solid educational foundation, he earned a Bachelor of Science in biophysics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1973. He went on to earn a Master of Science in macromolecular science from Case Western Reserve University in 1975, and a PhD in macromolecular science from the same institution in 1978.
Dr. Potenzone takes great pride in leading the creation of SciFinder during his tenure at Chemical Abstracts, a key component of the American Chemical Society. SciFinder revolutionized how scientists accessed information, enabling them to independently search complex systems without relying on traditional library assistance. Despite initial criticism from information professionals, SciFinder has become an invaluable resource in the scientific community. Earlier in his career, during his time at the EPA, he played a significant role in establishing the NIH EPA chemical information system in the 1980s, a pioneering initiative that increased the visibility and accessibility of chemical data previously scattered across various government databases. He attributes his success to his relentless pursuit of innovation, particularly in creating new chemistry tools. He finds it deeply rewarding to be at the forefront of developing novel solutions that others have not yet explored.
In the coming years, Dr. Potenzone aims to stay actively engaged and seek out opportunities where he can make a meaningful impact. While he is currently satisfied with his work, he is eager to take on new projects that challenge the status quo. This may involve exploring innovative methods for representing molecules in computer chemistry, potentially pioneering new approaches that have yet to be explored.
